Formula 1 In Crisis Again

MOTOR RACING - The political problems in Formula 1 are back and they could well be here to stay. Eight teams competing in this year's competition have announced that they will be forming a breakaway competition of their own in 2010, with those teams including Ferrari and the leaders of this season's Constructor's Championship, Brawn. The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) made the dramatic announcement in a statement on Friday, stating in no uncertain terms that they are collectively unhappy with Max Mosley and the FIA for consistently ignoring the teams' demands regarding the proposed budget cap plans, which FOTA do not want implemented.

This is undoubtedly the biggest problem encountered by the FIA in 61 years of Formula 1 racing. If the majority of the teams leave Formula 1, loserscomesecond, the world, and his wife, can see that Formula 1 will be in a mess. Which teams will come in to replace the likes of Maclaren and Ferrari? These names are synonymous with the sport and despite what Mosley may say they will be missed from Formula 1.

Of course, the big teams are aware of their own pulling power and they do seem intent on collectively bullying the FIA into submission over the budget cap issue. loserscomesecond think it is worth remembering what the budget cap proposals are all about: decreasing expenditure and increasing competitiveness. Many seem to have forgotten all about this, including seemingly the FIA and FOTA.

To us the argument is no longer about the budget cap. It is about egos. FOTA want rid of Max Mosley. Simple as. Can Mosley defeat the collective will of the Formula 1 teams and stay in his job? loserscomesecond think it most unlikely, but then again everyone thought Gordon Brown would be kicked out of Downing Street a few weeks ago and he is still there. Moseley will be hoping against hope that he can perform a similar escapology circus act.
