FOOTBALL - Never mind the big stir that Michael Owen's signing for Manchester United has caused. There are plenty of other premier league transfer rumours to gossip about. First up we have the news that Xabi Alonso is on his way to Real Madrid, but only if Alvaro Negredo heads to Liverpool as part of the deal. Either Rafa Benitez is a big fan of Negredo, or he does not want his team to be too light on Spaniards. Whichever, 23-year-old Negredo is clearly a promising talent. But we at loserscomesecond think we know who is getting the better deal if indeed the respective transfers go ahead. Alonso will be very difficult to replace. Gerrard and Torres are always spoken of as being the heartbeat of the Liverpool team, but they are not. Alonso is. He will be missed greatly, and if he does go we think it is safe to say that Liverpool will not be winning the Premier League this upcoming season.
In Manchester there could be activity at both United and City if reports in the News of The World are to be believed. The newspaper claim that despite earlier protestations about John Terry not being available at any price, Chelsea will in fact sell him to Manchester City if they bid £45 million. We think that is a lot for a player coming up to 29-year-old, but there you go. Another City target, Samual Eto'o, has said he will move from Barcelona only if City offer him £200k per week. However, he is willing to take a massive drop in salary demands if Manchester United came in for him. That massive drop would mean he is asking for only... wait for it... £150k per week.
What a joker Eto'o is! He is good, but he is not that good. Again, he is 28-year-old as well. There would not be much long-term mileage in him, as it is surely the case that he has spent his best years with Barcelona.
Finally for now, 'Big' Sam Alardyce - he cannot be referred to without the 'Big' - has officially lost the plot by apparently considering to offer former Italian international striker Christian Vieri a trial at Blackburn Rovers. In a return to the days of the Premier League becoming a retirement home for formerly top-notch footballers, 36-year-old Vieri stands to come to the Premier League and make a bundle of cash without actually doing much to earn it. What Big Sam is playing at we do not know.
