Phillips Idowu Named European Athlete Of The Year

ATHLETICS - Phillips Idowu has been named the European Athlete of The Year. The 30-year-old world triple jump champion will be presented with his award in Budapest on 17 October. Idowu won his gold medal at the World Championships in Berlin with a personal best jump of 17.73m.

By winning this award Idowu joins an illustrious group of athletes who have won European Athlete of The Year. Past winners of the award include the legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny, the dominant high hurdler of his generation Colin Jackson, and the world triple jump record holder Jonathan Edwards.

Two people Idowu may not be too happy at having his name alongside are the convicted drug cheats Dwain Chambers and Linford Christie, who won the award in 2002 and 1993 respectively. But let us not talk about them...
