'Midget Cup' For Dwarves Causes Uproar In Australia

HORSE RACING - A piggy-back race with dwarfs at the Cranbourne Cup meeting at Cranbourne racetrack in Victoria, Australia, has drawn condemnation. The midget race, cleverly called The Little Cup, which was part of the State of Victoria annual carnival, involved dwarves going on the backs of three men who each had to race 50 metres each with the winner the first to reach the finishing line.

Stuart Laing, a marketing manager at Racing Victoria, said the dwarf race was intended to be "harmless fun". He said: "We understand that you can't please everyone and if anyone's offended by the events of Sunday then we apologise to them." Apparently one of the midget "jockeys" fell off, but he escaped from his man-horse uninjured.

We cannot decide whether to laugh or be appalled. But we suppose the little fellas did not mind doing it, so if it was alright by them it is alright by us. So we must be at loggerheads with Meredith Tripp, a former president of the Short Statured People of Australia association.
"For a big corporate group seeing some sort of comical side to such an event is unfortunate," she said.
