FOOTBALL - FIFA President Sepp Blatter fully intends to stay in the role when his term as president expires in 2011, according to reports in the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. "I have not finished my mission in soccer. I hope that in 2011 the FIFA Congress has further faith in me, otherwise I'll go back to my village," said 73-year-old Blatter.
Blatter's role as FIFA president has often been marked by controversy, including when he was first elected to the role amid accusations that he offered cash incentives to voters in order to secure his election. Blattter, who has been FIFA president since 1998, has further controversial plans up his sleeve, most notably the 6+5 plan which is intended to increase the number of homegrown players at clubs. The 6+5 plan is opposed by the European Commission, and would be especially damaging to clubs in the English Premier League where foreign players at the leading clubs massively out-number homegrown players.
However, let us not dwell on the controversial aspects of Blatter's character and instead revel in him unintentionally falling off a stage.
