WBC Want To Ban Fathers From Working In Boxing Sons' Corner

BOXING - The World Boxing Council (WBC) wants to ban all fathers from working in their sons' corners during fights. WBC president Jose Sulaiman said the organisation already had a rule banning fathers from their sons' corners, but that the rule was being ignored. The WBC want the rule banning fathers from working their sons' corners in order to prevent tragedies in the ring.

The view taken by the WBC has been prompted by a study in California which shows that a recurring theme amongst deaths in the boxing ring is that the father was present in the boxer's corner. Dr Paul Wallace, who is chairman of the WBC's Medical Advisory Board, said: "The most common factor out of all the fatalities that had happened, was having fathers in the corner," he said of the study. "Now, that's not something that's a medical issue, but it's something that's clearly an association."

For once, it seems that somebody in boxing is suggesting something sensible for the future. That said, it would be interesting to know what unbeaten and now retired World Champion Joe Calzaghe has to say about the matter, bearing in mind he was trained for all his career by his father Enzo.
