RUGBY UNION - Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas has announced that he is gay. Rumours have surrounded Thomas and his sexuality for several years, and his announcement that he is gay has put an end to all speculation. Thomas, who is Wales' most capped rugby union international, has said: "I just want to thank everyone for the amazing response I have received, on behalf of me, my family and friends."Gareth Thomas revealed to the Daily Mail that it was in 2006 that he could not hide his sexuality any longer from his wife. "I was like a ticking bomb. I thought I could suppress it, keep it locked away in some dark corner of myself but I couldn't. It was who I was and I just couldn't ignore it any more. I'd been through every emotion under the sun trying to deal with this. It's been really tough for me hiding who I really am, but I don't want it to be like that for the next young person who wants to play rugby."
35-year-old Thomas has gained 100 caps playing for Wales, and captained Wales to the Grand Slam in 2006.
