FOOTBALL - We have not got this year's World Cup in South Africa out of the way yet, but officials in Brazil are already looking beyond that to the 2014 World Cup when Brazil is due to host the event. At a ceremony in Brasilia, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the state officials agreed to start the work needed to bring up to scratch stadiums and facilities in the 12 cities chosen as venues for the tournament. In all Brazil's government have pledged spending on the 2014 World Cup of 20.1 billion reais (approximately £7 billion) to fund the neccessary upgrade of Brazilian infrastructure ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It has been stated that around half of the money will be spent on improving public transport. Presumably this will also benefit the Olympic movement too, as the Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro is hosting the Olympics in 2016. For the record the London 2012 Olympics are set to cost around £9.3 billion if officials are to be believed, significantly more than a major sporting event which is due to take place two years later.
